"Our son has attended both the North Austin Montessori (NAMS) and Arbor Montessori schools which are owned and operated by Ranjine Perera and her daughter Tammy Perera. We started out at N.A.M.S. after visiting many preschools in North Austin. We chose it because of the warmth we felt from the Pereras when we visited the school. I did not feel the sense of warmth at the other schools I visited. We liked the fact that Tammy and her mother are so involved in the day to day activities of the school and are very accessible. Our son attended NAMS in 2007 where he attended the toddler class at the age of 2.5 years. He loved his teacher (Ms. Nipa) and enjoyed going to school. We liked the school because of the multicultural lessons that he learned and the parent involvement. We moved to the Arbor in 2008 because it was much more convenient. The playground at this school has got to be one of the best in Austin. Our son continues to grow and mature at the Arbor where he is in the primary class now. While at NAMS, he was very excited about being helped by the big kids at the school. Now at the Arbor, he has great pride in guiding the younger kids in the class. I think this has boosted his self esteem and will serve him well when he goes to kindergarten. We have also noticed that he is much better at cleaning up at home since attending these schools. He can count to 20 in Spanish too! We have been happy with our experience at both of the schools and have seen our son thrive while attending these schools. Every morning, he is excited to go to school which is the best indicator of a good school to us!!! "

"My husband and I enrolled Lila in North Austin Montessori School when she was 2 because we wanted her to experience a diverse, nurturing, and engaging environment that challenged her, but allowed her to grow and change at her own pace. Almost immediately we observed her language and communication skills explode! She loved her teacher and came home everyday talking about her peers. Lila enrolled in Arbor Montessori Academy in June of 2008 just as it opened because it was closer to home and because of its amazing environment – a homey feel to the classroom settings and an outstanding outdoor playground with high shady trees and wonderful space for exploring and running around. She loves her teachers, Ms. Nilli and Ms. Claudia. Under their guidance she is already learning her letters and numbers. And she has a song for everything! Each week Lila comes home with another artifact and story celebrating a different culture. Her mind is thriving with her classes; her sense of self has grown as she has learned new skills and made new friends. "Our son started attending the Arbor Montessori Academy just before he turned 3. He was previously in a small home daycare so we were unsure how he was going to take to the new environment. From the first day the teachers and staff made him (and us) feel welcome and now he looks forward to going to school every day. We are impressed with the broad range of skills and ideas he has been taught and with the kindness and knowledge of the teachers and staff. "After visiting many Montessori and other schools and child care providers that didn't meet our needs, I was happily surprised on our very first visit to North Austin Montessori. My daughter - who at 2 was apprehensive about entering school - walked in and immediately began exploring, picking up and playing with the "work" items in the classroom and acting as if she were at home. That was two years ago and since that time, and with a convenience-based move to Arbor Montessori, we find that she continues to look forward to her time in class, with her teachers and friends and is learning everything from cultures world-wide to letters, numbers and seasons. "We became familiar with the Montessori Method through North Austin Montessori School (NAMS) in 1998. Having quickly become disenchanted with Austin’s franchised childcare, smaller schools, and in-home care, we searched for something better for our children. What we had in mind was something personal and nurturing for our sons – a place where our family would feel a strong community bond and an environment where our sons would blossom.

We never would have known, back then, what an impact Montessori would make on our lives – not just our children’s. Unhappy with typical daycare experiences, we feel fortunate to have found Mrs. Perera and her school. We scheduled an informal interview with Mrs. Perera and our oldest son before he started and she helped us become acquainted with the materials used in the classroom. The materials we saw were elegant and simple, and, when we thought about it, the purpose of each made sense, as each fit into the much larger Montessori Method.

As a family, we had only vaguely heard of Maria Montessori and her research. But for the past 9 years, we have experienced in awe the transitions that are part of Montessori’s three-year cycle. My older son started in Montessori at 2 ½ years; my younger son began at 18 months. They are now 11 and 8 years old and have continued in the Method of learning through yet another established Montessori school in Austin once they were too old to continue at NAMS.

Our family is grateful to Mrs. Perera and to NAMS for maintaining their commitment to AMI and to current and former students who have benefited from the school’s care and compassion.

What we have experienced several times over is watching our sons blossom in their third year in Montessori. By the final year in the third-year cycle, Montessori children radiate confidence and leadership. This has happened in the 3 to 6 and 6 to 9 cycles for both our sons. Each time, as they enter their third year, something quite marvelous happens. They’ve mastered their work and they’ve taken it to new heights. When our older son was 9, after he had completed his testing, we discovered that in areas of his development he was performing at a 10th-grade level.

We are most grateful to Mrs. Perera and to Tammy Perera for continuing their exceptional work. Our family attributes our sons’ exceptional growth to the foundation laid by NAMS. Our sons still enjoy returning to NAMS to visit each summer or during the holidays.

If you’re considering Montessori and NAMS, I encourage you to observe students in the classroom environment. Pay particular attention to returning students. They will stand out from the crowd and, in most cases, leave you in awe of their maturity, leadership, and confidence."
